Father-inclusion principles

The Father-Inclusion Hub provides access to case studies and evidence-based resources. Our approach is founded on principles of father-inclusion that have been co-created with young fathers, specialists in father-inclusive practice, and the Following Young Fathers Further research team at the University of Lincoln.

Following Young Fathers Further is a qualitative longitudinal and participatory programme of research that supported understanding of the systemic barriers that contribute to the exclusion of men as fathers and to understand what works in embedding an ethos of father-inclusion across sectors to promote father engagement and family and societal well-being.

Our principles provide are centred around a framework for implementing and embedding a broader social welfare and policy ecosystem and the conditions that enable professionals to see and respond to fathers in an inclusive way and to support all fathers to be there for their children.

We have co-created a set of core values and objectives with the young dads of the North East Young Dads and Lads that we ask everyone to commit to. These handily align with the acronym FATHERS!

F

Foster and celebrate equality and inclusivity for all dads.

A

Advocate for all dads in all their diversity by challenging stigma and stereotypes

T

Transform assumptions about fatherhood, by fostering their capacity to care and celebrating their strengths and capabilities as parents.

H

Help build supportive communities that reduce isolation and uplift and empower dads.

E

Ensure access to resources and support systems tailored for dads that are informed by evidence-based practice

R

Raise awareness about the importance of fatherhood and its positive impact on children, families and society.

S

Seek and create opportunities for dads to demonstrate vulnerability, and to grow, learn, develop and succeed.
